The Utopia Oil Field is located approx 50 klms south west of Eromanga
l asked the previous owner Sheri Harley to write us something that we could
put on this website for people to gain a little knowledge about how the
Oil Well started. This was written January 2010 by Sheri.
Utopia was discovered in 1997 by Mr. V.H.Sparks.
After battling cancer, he began production in 2001 and subsequent to his
untimely death in 2002 - his daughter, Sheri Harley began operations.
In 2005 an additional producing well rounded out the legacy left behind.
with 4 producing wells.
For many years, Utopia and Oilwells Inc. of Kentucky were the smallest oil
producer in all of Queensland.
Additional discoveries since the sale of the business last year have
strengthened the legacy V.H. "Sparky" Sparks left behind,
so that the small field of Utopia will produce for many years to come,
bringing commerce to Eromanga, a remote little town in Queensland.

There's a rustic outdoor machinery museum that you can stroll about in.
It is complimented by an indoor Living History Centre incorporating an
Object Theatre. The Object Theatre was funded by the Qld Gov Q150 Project.
The Living History Centre/Museum is next to a public park with a covered playground for the kids, the park has a stunning memorial, inlaid with opal
in memory to the Opal Opolis days of Eromanga.
The Earliest Settlers were the Tully's, Costello's, & Durack's, around 1860.
Eromanga was first gazetted a Town in the early 1870's, when Opal was a
Fever of the time, the population then was 300 odd, with anything up to 1000
opal miners scouring the lands around the Town, there was a Shanty Town
pub called the 'Round House', which is still the source of many a ghostly tale.
At the Living History Centre, browse through hundreds of historic photos &
stories of the surrounding area, on computer which is also internet connected. View a film in a separate Movie Room, filled with relics, about how our
Forefathers came here to settle with sheep & cattle to build their empires, the story of Oil Drilling, also about the Opal miners past and present,
and let's not forget dear 'Betty', Flying Doctor Fundraiser & Mother to Many.
The Movie also has detailed information regarding the discovery of Dinosaur
Bones near Eromanga, affectionately named - Cooper, Zac and George.
Read about the newest discovery - click on the link
The Centre also has a Photo display that automatically shows pictures from
the 1860's to present day, as a slide show.
And now with a map on the wall so you know where you are going?
